Mia Mazal never planned a career in logistics. She was studying how to support children with special needs when a call about a nearshoring company put her on a plane to Colombia. She learned the industry alongon the way. The experience became Talento, the boutique nearshore staffing partner she co-founded and now runs as COO.
That story is the subject of her latest feature. Mia was profiled in Ship Happens' series Gorgeous Girls Work In Supply Chain, Jennifer Morris' project on the women a male-skewed industry tends to miss.
One theme hits close to Talento's work: the fear around hiring across borders. Fraud and double brokering have put risk front of mind, and nearshoring gets caught in that anxiety by association. Mia's answer is education, not defense.
"Many of the fears leaders may have about adding nearshore talent to their teams are not accurate. If I could educate everyone in the industry about the truths and myths personally, I would," she said.
Mia is just as clear on how young women find their footing in rooms and at events when they are new to the industry. Find your conference uncles, she says.
"People who won't think your questions are silly or naive, who have your back whether you are in the room or not, and who brings you to the right rooms," she said.
